And, now it is Fairy Time...

This last week has been crazy and exhilarating all at the same time.  Lights and sound are in, costumes are still trickling in.  Last week the Fairies decided to have a little 'Fairy Day' at my house to help their costumes along.. a little bit.

Here are a few photo highlights...
Michelle (Hippolyta Understudy) and Patrick (Flute) stopped by to help.

Abby (First Fairy) works on Peaseblossom's sari, while Michelle and Patrick adjourn to the bar to work on another piece of the costume.

Nearly there...

This will be a quickie--

We are well into Tech week... costumes are going in, lights and sound are headed in at the end of the week and the actors are more than ready... Just a little tired and playful this week.

Here is the Early Rehearsal Trailer!  Created by Anthony Chiles.

Last week was eventful, as I broke my foot backstage.  Literally, breaking a leg (well, a foot) for my show.  Supposed to be off it for 6 weeks, but the show makes that impossible and as when I am in production, that is the most important thing to me...  My cast and crew are working extremely hard to make things so much easier on me... As are my friends and family, who have definitely gone out of their way to make sure I can get done what I need (particularly a director friend who has his own competing show to worry about.)   Without these people, this show would have halted.  Because of this injury, I do not get to jump in and play Hippolyta on understudy night... I was actually looking forward to this, as it was the only female character in MIDSUMMER I have not yet played!  Ah well...

Now, for the cast and crew update!  There have been a few changes and alterations as the cast has grown and developed...

Merrily we (still) roll along...

We are entering the final week of working rehearsals, and after a very productive and creative rehearsal last Thursday, we are finally ready to put the show on the set, add in the interlude scenes, and tie this show up into the bawdy, silly, magical, fun little package it is meant to be.

The exhilaration and paranoid panic of these last weeks of rehearsal  are definitely taking their toll...

Tired and exhausted ... strained and lost friendships... stressed creativity... that about sums it all up for me and many of my actors right now.  There hasn't been one day since all this began that I haven't rehearsed or worked on this show at least 5 to 8 hours a day and this is in addition to the rest of my theatre commitments, real life and work.

Though most actors are not called to all rehearsals, there have been two (aside from myself) who have attended every rehearsal, meeting, audition session, activity that the production has spawned.  The three of us have been at the theatre hours early nearly every day, done a great deal of out of rehearsal shopping for props, research, and work and are just about ready to fall over!  Now, though, all the dedication and work is about to be tested and displayed as we ready ourselves to jump off the edge into tech week on 1st April.

Costumes and props are still in the void and off deadline, but set and lighting are in (or going in) and showing some progress.  I am used to having all props and costumes in and working at least 40 rehearsal hours before production week, so I am having to adjust and accept these additional stressful challenges.

I normally don't rehearse Shakespeare this long, but with the headache and inconvenience of not having all actors at the rehearsals they need to be at (ones additional to those given at auditions), I had to extend the process... If I had been able to have all my actors in place and at all called rehearsals, we could have shaved off at least two weeks of the process.

But, having examined some of the exhaustive issues of the process, I have to say I am anxious to see where the long and hard journey of the next two weeks leads us. Through all the stresses this show has presented, none have been insurmountable (so far) and is 'par for the course' for any production.  We've got this far... How much farther can we go?!

I take a short break over the next two days to audition my next show, but we are all back at it on Wednesday!

Still in the Woods...

It is now that time in the rehearsal process when a few actors are still struggling with lines, Ensemble actors have started attending and are being blocked in the show, while directors and production team are scrambling to create and develop details that will help bring the show to life.

These middle process rehearsals are always tedious, but are usually the most important. The actors begin to explore their characters more freely and open themselves up to some of the most emotional and challenging aspects of the show.  Actors have bonded and have become very close.

As this week progresses, we shall see the picture unfold before us, as the set, designed by Geoffrey Moss, goes in, props begin to fall into regular use and costumes find themselves placed on unsuspecting actor's bodies...

By the end of the week, we shall see the skeleton of a complete show.  Honestly, I am too busy directing the show at the moment to keep regular updates coming and my brain is focused on what I see on stage, rather than what I need to write in here, but as more exciting things come to light and more photos are taken, I will post again.  And, thanks to my friend, Geoff, as without him, this post would have not happened in my blog blocked state...

Ready, Set, Audition...

Before we begin exploring the complexities of one of Shakespeare's later comedies, we must take on the process of auditioning actors for MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING. While, somewhat tedious, auditions are one of my favorite aspects of the production process. The concept and visual pictures I have been putting together for months, can now start to come to life.

Over the next few weeks, many of you will come to know MUCH ADO's characters quite intimately.  Of course, many actors and actresses will come in wanting one of the two most challenging, yet satisfying characters in all of Shakespeare (Beatrice and Benedick), but don't cut off your opportunities too quickly.  Many of the male characters will likely be converted to female and some of the other male characters are great challenges in their own right.  So many of Shakespeare's characters offer such fun and exhilarating development opportunities and if you truly want to do the show, you might not want to pass those up.  This is a show that will offer actors much to do and enjoy while becoming part of it!  For those who are unfamiliar with my plans for the characters, take a look:

Musician and Singer - We are looking for at least one accomplished musician and / or singer to perform during most of the show.

During this production period, we will be discovering as much as we can about the 1920 - 1924 time period... through costume and props, research and activities that help us find the characters and atmosphere we all want to convey to our audience.

While, I am lucky enough to be able to secure the talents of Kelly Bennington, a wonderfully organized Assistant Director; Juliet Howard-Welch, a professional Stage Manager (New Orleans Shakespeare Festival / Dayton Opera --- and Equity Membership Candidate); and Susan Robert, my highly detail oriented costumer and a director in her own right... I do not have the luxury of the highly talented Set Designer I was blessed with for my last two shows (Geoffrey Moss), but never fear,  I have a few ideas of my own and hopefully we shall muddle through.

With auditions just one week away, I am receiving many nervous questions from first time Shakespeare performers, as well as seasoned  actors.... Just remember, give your first and best audition.  I will always give you the opportunity to start again, if you need to and I am looking for what YOU can bring to the role -- not how Emma Thompson or Kenneth Branagh played them.  Strong, articulate voices, creative readings and a fun personality.  Be sure to visit the audition event page, check out earlier blogs or e-mail me with questions.  You can also request a pdf version of the audition form here.  Bring yourself!

See you all on March 26 or 27!
